Persistent and unreasonable fear of a particular object, activity, or situation. There are tons of specific phobias, but most seem to fit into 4 categories. Must consider persistence and functional impairment when diagnosing. A number of ways to develop this disorder. Also all the other risk factors (inherited vulnerability) Intense fear or anxiety of social situations in which you may be scrutinized by others. Fear of acting in a way or showing signs of anxiety that will be negatively evaluated by others. Can be anticipatory and/or occur when in the social situation. Behavior in the social situation can look quite different across individuals. More common in people who are young (18-29 years), undereducated, single, and of low socioeconomic class. More common among white americans than americans of other racial backgrounds. Lowest rate among asian cultures; russian and us samples show highest rates. Fear of offending others or making them uncomfortable; concern about aspects of personal appearance (stuttering, blushing, body odor)
