Our beliefs are not just a matter of evidence and logic. Us is the world"s greatest threat to peace. Our core beliefs strongly depend on our social environment. In particular, our close social relationships (family, friends, etc. ) Sociology cannot tell us whether any religion is true, right, wrong, etc. But how people come to believe what they do. Close relationships obviously influence you if you are born into a religion and have stayed in it. Surely the message is much more important than the messenger. Interested in looking at conversion to the unification church in san francisco (1960s) They handed out leaflets, called meetings but efforts to get people to convert fell flat. Church tried to reach strangers and were highly unsuccessful. Having friends in the religion makes it more plausible. After being converted, people will understand their religion in theological terms. Not being dishonest just reconstructing their past in light of their present.
