Document Summary

Steven spitzer: deviant labels are applied to people who interfere with capitalism and its functions. Threats to private property are considered deviant, but capitalists who engage in criminal behavior (white collar, slumlords) are seen as doing business. Because capitalism rests on productive labor, maintaining the status quo, and respecting authority, people who cannot or will not do those things (adolescents) will quickly be tagged delinquent or criminal. The drugs we hold to be illegal (marijuana, hallucinogens, ecstacy). Are those which impede capitalism; those drugs which are legal (pharmaceutricals) are those which abide capitalism. Greenberg: applies pitze(cid:396)"s (cid:449)o(cid:396)k di(cid:396)e(cid:272)tly to deli(cid:374)(cid:395)ue(cid:374)(cid:272)y a(cid:374)d adoles(cid:272)e(cid:374)t frustration that springs from a capitalistic society, its marginizalization of adolescents, and the juveniles parents social status frustration. Juveniles who find themselves without the latest material objects (lack of capital) may be more likely to become deviant. Class stratification explains why poorer kids commit more crimes.
