SOCI 3860 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Moderation Management
Document Summary
Soci 3860 sociology of drug and alcohol use. Because an individual convicted of a dui is not necessarily an alcoholic, i think that the court ordering the individual to a moderation management program would be a better suited consequence. First, by sentencing an individual to an alcoholic anonymous program, the court is stigmatizing the individual as an alcoholic or at least as someone with alcohol-dependency problems. Stigmatization can be a powerful force and if the offender is young, the negative stigmatization could distance the individual from society. This could potentially lead the individual to socialize into not necessarily the alcoholic role, but any deviant role. Second, the punishment of enrollment in an alcoholic anonymous program does not really fit the crime itself. The individual"s act was illegal not because he was an alcoholic but because he chose to operate a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol.
