I believe that controlled users have a valid reason in wanting to avoid attaining the heroin addict status. Sociologist howard becker would justify this reasoning as well. Theory attributes an individual"s engagement in deviant behavior to being labeled as delinquent. In other words, becker would say that if a controlled heroin user was labeled as a heroin addict and people associated him with that scene, then he would eventually accept the identity as his own. Thus essentially assuming the delinquent role and engaging in delinquent actives that one with the heroin addict role would perform. I think this also relates to why, in most cases, controlled heroin users keep their use secret. Keeping their use a secret is essential to preventing the heroin addict label.
