I think the medicalizing of heroin as a standard treatment for addiction patients who cannot succeed in the more normal treatments will grow as a treatment. Because of the opportunity of variety among addicts, a variety of treatment is necessary to meet all needs. However, prescribing heroin must remain a desperate remedy, a last-resort option, and must maintain strict guidelines to avoid heroin use from becoming an appropriate or acceptable practice to the average person. When marijuana was introduced as a medical remedy to be prescribed, the negative stigmatization of the illegal drug diminished slightly as the dangerous drug turned into one that brings comfort to the ill.
