Document Summary
Adaptation-any beneficial adjustment of the organism to the environment: cultural adaptation - immediate, physiological acclimatization physiological response to a single stress or stimuli, they are temporary-only exist when you are in the particular environment. Example: soroche mountain sickness: developmental acclimatization when they experience the stress during developmental stages of life so the acclimatization is permanent for the individual. Example: people living in high altitudes have larger hearts, but their children won"t be born with that: genetic adaptation product of natural selection. Increased wind duration and velocity: there are cultural adaptations to all of these problems: Taking vitamins/bringing vegetables to the community: hypoxia oxygen deficiency in tissues. Respiration increases initially, but returns to normal after a few days: increase in lung volume: total volume of air that can be moved in one breath. Solar radiation: skin color determined by: Melanin (melanocytes) absorbs ultraviolet light: physiological acclimatization. Tanning increases melanin which absorbs ultraviolet light, tanning is temporary.
