Lithic Analysis Continued and Ceramic Analysis
Assemblage any group of artifacts that are in an analytic study
Tjiangin domestic
o High level of slicing
o Low scraping
o Very low sawing and panning
Guatemala economically specialized
o Very high sawing
o Very low slicing and scraping
9N8 Patio H Copan specialized and domestic combined, but specialization isn’t very
high-it is actually political specialization
o Moderate level of slicing
o Low levels of scraping, sawing, and panning
Residue analysis no edge damage like the other 3 types of use/wear
Ceramic Analysis
o Clay + water+ fire(heat)/firing = ceramics
o It is like plastic in its flexibility and it can be shaped to the desired form, but once
it has dried and heat has been applied it is fixed in shape
o Characteristics of ceramics:
Paste the plastic component, clay itself
Temper aplastic component added to the paste to aid in firing;
substances like sand, grit, crushed stone, crushed bone, crushed
shell, plant fiber, feathers, dung can be added to prevent the ceramic
from shrinking too much and from cracking when it dries
o This substances can be used to create temporal types, sites
can be dated by the ceramics that are found
Slip liquid coating of clay, usually colored, applied to the surface
of the ceramics before firing
Glaze vitrious(glass like) coating applied to the ceramic prior to
firing
All of the above characteristics are called ware and are the physical
attributes of the ceramic
