BIOL 3324 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Lipid Bilayer, Transcellular Fluid, Body Water
Document Summary
Total body water consists of intracellular and extra cellular fluid: 60% icf. Low in na+ and cl: 40% ecf. All types of ecf have about same osmolality. Electroneutrality= sum of positive charges must equal sum of negative charges if the positive and negative charges of the anions and cations do not balance out macromolecules will even it out. Of the ecf, about 20% is blood volume. This is about 3 l of fluid. Generally, blood vessels can hold about 6 l: the other 3 l consists of solid components of the blood= plasma. Proteins and lipids make up about 7% of plasma. Negatively charged proteins attract cations so there are more cations in the blood than outside fluid. The negatively charged proteins repel anions so there are more anions in the outside fluid than in the blood. About 75% of ecf is interstitial fluid.
