Anatomy: refers to structure i. e ears and nose. Physiology: refers to the function of a structure i. e smelling and hearing. The cranium and vertebral column provides the first line of defense. A series of 3 layered membranes: 1st layer is the pia mater, 2nd layer is the arachnoid mater, 3rd layer is the dura mater (most outer layer) Fluid that circulates between the pia and arachnoid mater. The brain: initiates and regulates almost all sensory, motor and cognitive functions. Brainstem: directly atop the spinal cord, relay station between the body and the brain, regulates involuntary function s. Cerebellum little brain : coordination of muscle movement. Maintains posture and equilibrium: maintains body position in space, limited cognitive role. Cerebrum: thinking, rationalizing, problem solving, 2 mirror image hemispheres. Communication between the 2 hemispheres takes place in the corpus colosseum. Left controls the right and the right side controls the left (contralatity: 6 cerebral lobes (1) frontal.
