Chapter 15-18 lecture notes: serio io and device drivers. Parallel 8 individual bit values place on 8 pins which are transmitted simultaneously: fast but expensive and bulky, example application. Serial 8 bit values place on one pin which are sent one after another: requires additional control and status signals/built-in synch techniques, slower than parallel but cheaper and practical, example application. Programming for serial/parallel io is the same: just determine which one to use initially. Simplex communicate one direction only: tv or radio broadcast. Half-duplex communication only one direction at a time. Full-duplex communication in both directions simultaneously: telephone. Isochronous the clock signal is derived from the specially-coded data signal itself: ex: firewire, usb. Asynchronous synchronization overhead (start, stop bits) is inserted into the bit stream so that the receiver can repeatedly re-synchronize: ex: sci on the 9s12. Similar to serial port and uart (universal asynchronous receiver transmitter) On computers, it"s is called com port.
