Document Summary
William lloyd garrison, a prominent abolitionist leader and one of. In 1845, a lot of white people didn"t believe that a slave was capable of writing his own autobiography. He needed a symbol to help support his abolitionists views: frederick douglass, 1845. Educate people about what slavery was truly like in the hopes of gaining support for the abolition of this horrific practice. Its success was derived from the fact it was a factual, first hand account, written loud and clear in simple and precise language. Written w/ intent to persuade: douglass served as a slave on farms on the talibot county maryland and in baltimore throughout his youth. In baltimore, especially, douglass enjoyed relatively more freedom than slaves usually did in the south. He was exposed to politics due to being so close to dc: he was about 20 when he escaped. Although illegal, douglass escaped to reunite with his fianc e anna murray.
