HIST 1376 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Pequot War, Praying Town, Puritans
Document Summary
2 factors: economic need and religion is essential in the colonies. Referred to as as bible commonwealth-- meaning, individuals are supposed to develop their own relations with god (reading bible, attending church). Both individuals and community have a relation with god. People were spying on one another, everybody knows everybody"s business. Because of the entire community"s relation with god. If everyone is living a good christian life, fulfilling their obligations god will show favor on your community. Signs: good harvest, lots of kids, low mortality. If members were not fulfilling their obligations god is displeased. Puritans are fearful of god which is why they spy on each other. Puritans did not come for religious freedom! wanted the freedom to practice their own religion. Constantly monitoring behavior and punishing those who are out of line and especially quick to punish religious dissenters. Communities are incredibly intolerant on what goes against what they want. Wanted to bring christianity in native americans.
