Good climate not as hot and also inland protected from the brutal weather in the east. Not as swampy (like the chesapeake) as long as you"re away from the mountains (not as rocky as new england) Great weather + land = healthier population. River systems that run deep into interior of the continent. Adv: transportation, trade, agriculture, freshwater, protection, fish, defense. Beginning in 1609 the dutch explore this area. Finds one of the rivers and reaches the mouth of the river which is present day albany. Indians in the area: five nations/iroquois confederacy. Groups of different indians and are all allied together. Indians want: clothes, tools (metal), weaponry, glass mirrors beads (believed to have spiritual value, shinier the object the more spiritual) Europeans want: exclusively want skins/furs of animals (especially beavers)
