Thematic thesis: during reconstruction, freedom and what it meant to be free, became a topic of conflict. It became open to different and often contradictory interprettaion. Out of this conflict arose new kinds of race relations between black and white southerners, and a new definition of what it meant to have equal rights for all americans. For freed blacks reconstruction brought an end to: Move freely to different parts of the country. Women- domestic domain; withdrew from plantation and shifted to domestic life [stay with families] Rise in methodist and baptist black churches. Housed school, social events, and political gatherings. Education became the central driving force in emancipation. Porters etc would study spelling during breaks. Many former slaves were elected to office. The right to vote was a symbol of empowerment and equality for black slaves. Attended petitions, parades, demanded right to vote. They were determined to learn about politics. Anything less than full citizenship was an insult.
