Housed school, social events, and political gatherings. Education became the central driving force in emancipation. Porters etc would study spelling during breaks. Many former slaves were elected to office. The right to vote was a symbol of empowerment and equality for black slaves. Attended petitions, parades, demanded right to vote. They were determined to learn about politics. Anything less than full citizenship was an insult.
