HLT 2320 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Newborn Screening, Mendelian Inheritance, Isotretinoin
Document Summary
Teratogens are agents/ factors that causes malformation of an embryo. Disease doesn"t skip generations so you and your parent(s) have it. Your parents are both carriers for you to get it. Mutations come from the sex chromosome (x) Severity of some genetic conditions can be affected by environment (epigenetics) Genes influence susceptibility to disease of adulthood. The older you get, the more your genes change. Test drop of blood from newborns for metabolic abnormalities. All newborns in us are screened for at least 2 conditions: pku and hypothyroidism. States vary in conditions screened for most conditions are autosomal recessive. Early diagnosis can prevent or reduce permanent damage. Some condition are complicated to test for cystic fibrosis. Screen for recessive genes in high risk populations. Screening programs in 1970s was misunderstood and poorly conducted. Or continue with understanding that your child will have a condition. Cancer research- most successful research so far.
