Goes back to puritans: good parents had the moral duty to defeat expressions of sin such as stubbornness, willfulness, and disobedience. Only few cases were reported for physical abuse or sexual abuse. Child maltreatment is not equally likely in all families: parents with low incomes or lacking education or who participated in a poverty program were five times more likely to maltreat their children.
