The marshall plan put pressure on the dutch to negotiate with the indonesians (cid:523)or they wouldn"t receive financial aid(cid:524) )n korea the americans and the russians accept japan"s surrender. The dutch grant independence to the indonesians but lay their debt on them. The 38th parallel is the dividing line of korea, it is artificial because it cuts through preexisting rivers and roads. Korea was mostly farmland, america got agricultural area seoul, population 1 million, and important ports, the area that was closest to japan. British and the chinese also could have had a claim in korea but never acted upon it. The russians interpret korea as a buffer zone.
