Document Summary

Week 1 - working with dna and rna. Reverse transcriptase (found in viruses) goes backwards. Epigenetics > using genetic techniques in uences by the external environment: this is reversible, e. g. modi cations of histones and dna like methylation and acetylation. Gene expression starts in the nucleus but is exported to cytoplasm. Template strand > used to synthesise rna (in 5" > 3" direction) The genetic code > how the mrna speci es the aa (3 different bases - codons) Trna (transfer rna) brings in aa to the ribosome, it"s an adaptor. Rrna (ribosomal rna) is a component of the ribosome and is essential for it"s function. Rna polymerase i > makes some rrna. Rna polymerase iii > makes some trna and some rrna. Purines > adenine and guanine (2 rings) Pyrimidines > thymine and cytosine (1 ring) and in rna uracil. Nucleotide > base + ribose sugar + phosphate group. Dna has major and minor grooves (structural information)
