Document Summary

Portion of memory where incoming info is encoded & interpreted. Capacity is less than 20 seconds; 7 +/- 2. Extend by using meaningful chunks of information. Holds info more permanently after it has been transferred from stm. Storage is unlimited, just don"t know how to retrieve it. Semantic memory: meanings, descriptions, understanding of things. Episodic memory: sequence of events, personal experiences, any info that relates to ourselves: these are two separate memory holders. The stronger the connection, the faster the response time. Info is stored in memory as an associative network of nodes and connections between nodes. Memory is activated in a spreading manner: a pattern of associations around a particular concept is called a schema. Priming: an earlier stimulus invuences response to a later stimulus by making a certain concept salient and increasing the likelihood of retrieving related concepts. When a screen has coins as the background people remember more of the prices.
