ATMS 120 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Nexrad, Microsecond, Radome
Document Summary
Weather was a nuisance to radars because they were used to detect aircrafts. Most radars are on the ground, but some are in the sky, and they can be stationary or mobile. Radome: protects the radar dish from weather and animals. Black dot in hurricane: dish keeps spinning 360 degrees, but can"t look directly up (right above the dish)-called cone of silence. Every dot is a location or a radar. Everywhere in yellow can see 4,000 ft above ground level. Everywhere in orange can see 6,000 ft above ground level. Everywhere in blue can see 10,000 ft above ground level. Cell phone frequencies can blind the radar. Military aircraft spray chaff to confuse radar guided missiles and disguise aircraft from. Dish sends out broadcast signals in microwave or radio waves. Radar sends radiation in pulses, and waits to listen to what will come back to the dish. Radar is measuring echos off of every raindrop.
