Ex: how does police have to act to enforce laws, right to a jury trial, w/o substantive etc. Subject matter jurisdiction- the power of the court to hear a particular type of case. This is determined by the constitution or statute that created the court. Jurisdiction is the court"s power to render a binding decision of law. General subject matter jurisdiction- ability to hear all" types of cases/disputes. Limited subject matter jurisdiction- limited to certain categories of cases. General rule- state trial courts are courts of general subject matter jurisdiction. State appellate courts= they can hear appeals from state.
