Document Summary

Separation of dyes and spinach pigment by column and thin-layer chromatography (tlc) One of the most important techniques to study and analyze organic compounds is chromatography. Utilizing this technique in lab allows for closer examination of the smallest of components that make up the organic compounds. Chromatography consists of separating distinct parts of the molecule so that the parts are smaller and easier to identify. Different types of chromatographic methods will be conducted within this lab. Two of them are dry column chromatography and the simple set-up of thin-layer chromatography (tlc). Both methods are utilized to observe different pigments (more so pigments from spinach leaves). The main focus that both chromatographic methods have in common for this lab regards to polarity. Movement is observed from the molecules that are identified and separated into parts due to polarity. The common phrase kept in mind throughout this lab, like attracts like, clarifies the kind of attraction certain molecules have.
