Document Summary

Chem 312 lecture 30 metalloproteins, myoglobin, hemoglobin, carbonic anhydrase. Case study 1: dioxygen transport in mammals - myoglobin and hemoglobin. O2 is a product in photosynthesis and a reactant in respiration for mammals. The problem is that o2 is not very soluble in the blood and because of this, an oxygen transport protein is needed in cells inside an animal. You need an oxygen transport and storage protein but you need it to be selective for oxygen. This protein is a o2 storage protein that is in the muscles. There are four subunits of hb that cooperate in the binding and release of o2. binding oxygen to one of the subunits increases the probability that the other subunits will be able to bind oxygen. Loss of oxygen from one subunit increases the probability that the other subunit will lose oxygen. Heme is dome-shaped when o2 is not bound.
