We live in a social environment that sends us mixed messages with respect to drugs. Two ways of looking at drugs and behavior. Drug dependence : condition which an individual feels a compulsive need to continue taking a drug. The drug assumes an increasingly central role in the individual"s life. Depending on the intent of the person, drug use can be considered either instrumental. Instrumental : motivation of a drug user who takes the drug for a purpose other. Recreational : motivation of a drug user who takes the drug only to get high than getting high. Drug misuse : prescription or over-the-counter drug is used inappropriately. Drug abuse : licit or illicit drugs are used in ways of impairment. Earliest experience with drugs came from tasting naturally growing plants. These people were able to attain great power within their cultures. Shamanism: practice of healing in which treatment is based on trancelike states.
