Econ 102 - lecture 3 - economic freedom & quality. The amount of goods available isn"t sufficient to satisfy all human desires. Important since it"s what forces choice and tradeoffs. No matter what one"s current circumstances, it"s always possible to imagine and achieve a more desirable state of affairs. To desire to a specific good can be limited. The principle that the individual human being is the basic unit of research in the social sciences. Only individuals can choose, not groups of people. People will make the choice that will best satisfy their values. Doesn"t mean they only care about themselves. Rational doesn"t translate to being moral (ie. a doctor and a serial killer are both making decisions that pursue their goals) People have to prefer something over others. Price system: a network of interrelated prices of goods and services. Think of it as an orchestra run by a conductor performing music.
