Why gis: solve problems w/ geospatial or geographic component, to link locations to attributes, to do it faster than by hand, to make results available more easily. What is spatial information: not data, but it is information, data = facts. Information = knowledge that comes from facts: any multi-dimensional information, ex medical imaging, architectural drawings, models of dna. What is geospatial information: parti(cid:272)ular kind of spatial info a(cid:271)out earth"s surfa(cid:272)e, where is something, what is at a given location, sometimes called geographic information. What is a gi system: any information system, manipulates, queries, edits, summarizes, visualizes, gis: information system based on geospatial info. What does a gi system include: data geospatial + non-spatial, technology software (acting on data, technology hardware (computer, scanner, plotter, digitizer, people (gathering, managing, querying, presenting) Representation + maps: geographical primitives (basic shapes, point, line, area/ polygon.
