Description
1/16/13 LECTURE 2: Cells, DNA, and Transcription -when was dna born? 3/5 billion years ago - deoxiribonucleicacid vs ribonucleicacid -dna stores the information, rna transfers the info to proteins, which do the work = the central dogma of molecular bio -dna doesn’t do much work -cant see cells with eye, but only in microscope (10-100 microns) )animal –plant cells (which are bigger); each cell has organelles -plant cells bigger -plant cells have cellulose in the walls -dna is in the nucleus, chloroplasts, and mitochondrion -the nucleus: where most info is; wall is made of skin (nuclear envelope) , and the nucleolus inside (does not perform important functions) -nuclear pores on the envelope allow molecules to move into and out of the nucleus Chromatin= DNA + pprotei
