Papal revolution (1050-1150): pope gregory vii declares that kings have no authority over the church. A dual system of government was introduced, with church and state both exercising authority over the same people in the same territory. Protestant reformation (1517): luther, calvin, zwingli, simons, and others call for religious liberty and pluralism within the church. Protestantism provides an intellectual basis for liberty of conscience.
