Early psychology: care about outcomes (ex: behaviorists, care about problems (ex: freud) Hippies came along: emotions themselves are important, we should study happiness, we should study positive things in humanity, not just focus on the problems. Study human strengths: resilience, coping, life satisfaction, love, happiness, self-esteem, optimism. Optimists gloss over mistakes, preventing them from learning from mistakes. Defensive pessimists prepared for the worst possible outcomes. What happens to us doesn"t determine our happiness tragic events are overcome. Durability bias: think events alter long-term happiness, but they don"t, adjust to our current situations return to out set point of happiness. Motivation psychological drives that propel us in a specific direction. Explains why you do a lot of work right before a deadline. Biological factors thirst, hunger, sex, survivial. Emotional factors panic, fear, love, hatred. Arousal a general level of activation. We are motivated to regulate our arousal so that it stays at (about) the same level over time = optimal arousal.
