Tuesdays class: articulatory system > 2:00-2:30, exam review > 2:30-3:15. Will address questions in each of the four chapters. Exam 1 on 9-22 portions covered from rst class > today. Respiration: process of moving air in and out of the lungs. Biological functions: oxygen supply, removal of carbon dioxide. Non-biological functions: lungs provide the energy source for speech, primary components, lungs > surrounded by 12 pairs of ribs, rib cage > house the lungs, air passageways, diaphragm. Muscles of the respiratory system: 1. Boyle"s law: increase lung volume = decrees in pressure. Law of gasses: air ows from areas of high pressure to areas of low pressure. Quiet breathing: equal inspiration and expiration times, expiration passive. Inspiration: rapid and forceful inspiration, greater amount of air inhales as much as 2l, time spent inhaling is short relative to time spent exhaling. Inspiratory and expiratory muscles activated during speech to prevent air from rushing out of the lungs too quickly.
