Document Summary

Laryngeal cancer: persistent hoarseness in the absence of colds or allergies, removal of the entire larynx may become necessary in some cases, trachea is repositioned to form a stoma for breathing, treatment: A person takes air in through the mouth. Traps it in the throat, and then releases it. As the air is released it makes the upper part of the throat / esophagus vibrate and produce sound. Surgeon creates a connection between the trachea and the esophagus with a small hole. A small, one-way shunt value is then inserted into the hole. To speak: the person inhales air through the stoma and into the lungs, covers the stoma with a finger, air from the lungs is then directed from the trachea, through the shunt valve and sometimes esophagus. Voice disorders resulting from neurological impairments: vocal fold paralysis. Caused by damage to the recurrent branch of 10th cranial nerve (vagus)
