COMM 101 Lecture 2: RAR2 Lind
Document Summary
The first article is about media audience"s interpretation of media content. Specifically, how white and black audiences perceive a story about discrimation differently. Dr. lind deals with cultural and intergroup conflicts here. The research was conducted by showing a tv news story about discrimination by real estate agents, to two groups of white and black viewers. She then surveyed them and asked different questions surrounding the incident and recorded their answers. The result of this shows that white viewers acknowledged the problem, but weren"t truly affected by the issue of discrimination and brushed it off. On the other hand, the black viewers found this incredibly relevant and made a connection to the deep-rooted racism faced everyday being black in america. Dr. lind found this issue to be called passive racism. The discrimination in the news story didn"t matter to most white viewers because it doesn"t intrude their reality.
