Document Summary

In opposing blackness: black american women and questions of citizenship in the. U. s media dr. singletary speaks about black women being portrayed as flawed citizens by the media and how far it dissociates them from the ideal image of american femininity. She uses examples of today"s media and shows how they perpetuate the negative stereotypical image of black women. The first example is of garbourey sidibe from the film precious. Despite the actress"s major success from the movie, she was not displayed on magazine covers, because she did not fit the ideal american woman look (p. 6). Instead the images of her portrayed by the media make her look unattractive and emphasize features that are the opposite of ideal by today"s beauty standards, as well as hyper sexualize her features (p. 8). This was mostly due to lynch being a fragile young woman with blonde hair and blue eyes, and johnson being a black woman.
