School rules/behaviors characterize girls more than boys. More likely to have adhd or a diagnosed a w/ a learning disability. Boys -demanded attention; girls quietly wait their turn. Girls = less likely to be scolded/reprimanded or sent to school authorities. More attention is paid to boys then girls (work/play quietly on their own) Boys = get lower grades/repeat grades then girls, but girls less likely to believe they will be successful. Social cognitive theory: interactions b/w child and social environment are key. Critics: pays too little attention to child"s own mind & understanding. Gender scheme theory: gender develops through gender schemas of what is gender (in)appropriate in their culture. Schema: cognitive structure/network of associations that guide an individuals perceptions. Gender schema: organize the world in terms of male and female. Rapport talk: the language of conversation and a way of establishing connection & negotiating relationships w/others. Report talk: means of establishing status & power.
