Social cognitive theory: interactions b/w child and social environment are key. Critics: pays too little attention to child"s own mind & understanding. Gender scheme theory: gender develops through gender schemas of what is gender (in)appropriate in their culture. Schema: cognitive structure/network of associations that guide an individuals perceptions. Gender schema: organize the world in terms of male and female. Rapport talk: the language of conversation and a way of establishing connection & negotiating relationships w/others. Report talk: means of establishing status & power.
