After a point-source event at a restaurant, there is an outbreak of giardiasis. This was an isolated event: communicate prevention information and findings, monitor surveillance data. The unpublished tb outbreak chapter by dr. ricks al. Summary: mycobacterium tuberculosis attacks lungs, spread by droplets, children under 5 not infectious, co morbidity with hiv. 1 case of tb is enough for outbreak. 90-95% of infections will not develop disease(latent). Active disease symptoms: cough, pain in chest, weakness/fatigue, weight loss. Inquiring if ever had positive tb skin test. Nevada state health division: create a tentative case definition- lab confirmed tb which was genotypically and epidemiologically linked to an outbreak patient, or a clinically diagnosed tb case epidemiologically linked to a lab confirmed outbreak tb patient. Re-interviewed to verify medical records, find more cases/contacts. Over 500 contacts found; 130 (22%) had latent tb; 77 contacts not found: perform epidemiologic analysis. 8 cases; 75% adults (6 of 8); median age 25.
