NURS 210 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Hemostasis, Viscosity, Insulin Resistance
Document Summary
Muscle that pumps oxygenated blood to organs, muscles, tissues and cells. Needs its own o2 supply via the coronary arteries. Oxygen requirements increase as the heart works harder, pumps faster. Oxygen requirements increase if svr is higher. Occurs when the o2 requirements are greater than the o2 supply. Can be a result of reduction in coronary blood flow or an increased need for o2. Ischemia to the heart produces symptoms of chest pain. Chest pain that occurs when the heart itself has insufficient blood supply. There can be radiation to the shoulder, jaw, arms and shoulder blade area. Pain is described as pressure, heaviness, squeezing. Associated symptoms can include nausea, diaphoresis, weakness, sob. Oxygen needs of heart exceed supply, heart"s ability to provide oxygen. Occurs during exercise, stress, increase in activity level. Resolves with cessation of exertive activity or rest. No permanent damage to heart is present.
