NURS 210 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Zafirlukast, Pharyngitis, Bioavailability
Document Summary
Help patient cough up thick tenacious secretions; result is improved breathing and increased airflow. Given via nebulizer, through et tube or tracheostomy. Used for patients who have difficulty mobilizing and coughing up secretions. Given via nebulizer or directly instilled into et tube or tracheostomy tube. Onset in 1 minute, peaks in 5-10 minutes. Decreases thickness, viscosity, tenacity of respiratory secretions. Protects liver from toxic effects of acetaminophen. Dilute the drug with juice if given orally. Wipe face after administration to remove excess drug. Teach pulmonary hygiene to patient and family. Get provider approval for use of other drugs. Drug is often given by respiratory therapist. Mimic effects of sns stimulation on beta 1 and 2 receptors. Work by dilating bronchi, increasing the rate and depth of respirations. We usually use beta 2 selective drugs for respiratory disorders. Also given via inhalation by use of nebulizer, inhaler (mdi) With inhalation, bronchodilation occurs within 5-15 minutes.
