Gilligan as born in 1936 in nyc and earned her doctorate in social psychology at. Gilligan"s stages of moral development: selfish, social, principled morality. According to psychoanalytic theories, males tend to have difficulty with relationships while females tend to have problem with individuation. (gilligan 8) It is different without saying better or worse (gilligan, 1982:14) Mary pipher: clinical psychologist who studied adolescent girls in her therapy practice, found that girls are forced to make important decisions at puberty: gain approval. Or be true to themselves: the code of goodness for girls: Be competent without complaint (quoted from pipher 1995:39: the culture causes girls to abandon their true selves and take up false selves (pipher, 37, intelligent resistance keeps the true self alive (pipher, 44) Male chauvinism is the belief that women are inferior to men. Lack of jobs, racism, poverty, and constant surveillance by criminal legal system made it difficult for them to develop into this mainstream ideal of manhood.
