SOC 385 Lecture 12: Soc 385 Intro to Sociology Theory Unit: Gender
Document Summary
Gender: sex is biological fact, gender is a social construct. It is not only or simply institutions: structure concrete. It has many levels: micro (interactions), meso (networks) and macro (socioeconomic and large social institutions). In marx, social structure is mainly about economic relations. Social groupings to be understood according to classes and mode of production. In weber, social structure is mainly about organizations and rationality. In durkheim, social structure is mainly about moral regulations and social cohesions (or lack of). Society is organized around these norms and around solidarity: risman suggests that we have to think of how gender (roles, ideas about gender, etc) exists in all the social levels in society. This means: 1) the individual level: gendered self, 2) the meso-level: interactions and networks between people, 3) and in institutions. Intersectionality: while there are several domains of inequality/oppression/domination, intersections matter.
