Evolutionary change (genetic changes in a population over time) Genetics are very important and their mechanisms are the foundation for evolutionary change. Get it from mother (dna comes from both) Thoughts are that mitochondria used to be prokaryotic. Union of 2 sex cells = zygote. Two chains of nucleotides making up a double helix. Bases = (adenine, thymine), (guanine and cytosine) Franklin"s x-ray diffraction confirmed that there was a helical structure of dna. A sting of codons make up an amino acid. String of amino acids = a protein. Unit of dna, a series of codes that make up amino acids that ultimately make proteins. It is redundant because there are several different codons that make up and amino acid. Helpful because if there is a mutation it could still code for the same amino acid and the overall amino acid stays the same. There is a start and stop code (this doesn"t change)
