A definition of life: there is no simple definition of life, but, all earth organisms . Have a common set of biological molecules. Can evolve: additional characteristics of life. Reproduce and pass genetic information to offspring. Do not grow from child to adult. Do not produce offspring; do not pass genetic information. Do not metabolize human flesh for nourishment. Structure of atoms: physical properties of chemicals. Atoms: the smallest units of an element: atom structure. Atoms are composed of protons, neutrons, and electrons. Protons (positive charge) + neutrons form atomic nucleus. Electrons or e- (negative charge) are outside the nucleus: electrons are in shells" surrounding nucleus. Valence number = the number of electrons in the outer shell". Determines types of chemical bonds it can form. Each shell can hold a certain number of e- Third shell = 8 e: atoms will donate or accept electrons in order to have a completed outer shell.
