01/15/19: the great chain of being is a way of ordering the universe with god first. In the medieval world, everything was ordered with a similar hierarchy: feudal system, king, nobility, knights, peasants. In the great chain, no individuals mattered, only the office they held (except god): and it was the job of the higher sort to protect the lower. It"s like college hierarchy: doctorates, masters, bachelors. Italian renaissance: 1300-1600, rebirth of learning, art, literature, politics, etc, rise of humanism, the commercial revolution began to break down the feudal system and shifted the focus to entrepreneurial goals. This led to the age of exploration: origins of slavery, 1550, 1500-1700. Even though they were all christian, they did not all get along. They waged a war against sin (luxury, corruption, etc: british government, king, parliament, house of lords, house of commons. In 1606, james i took the throne followed by charles i in 1625.
