Personal info, sensitive info, and personally identifiable information. Definition: set of all information that is associated with a specific person. Combinations of data elements can be surprising. Person"s identity: defined by some subset of personal information. In general values of data elements and combinations specify unique individuals. Ssn originally intended to be a unique identifier. Why is it important: if it gets in the wrong hands, then someone can impersonate you, identity theft, etc . Ex: ssn, dna, an individual"s genomic sequence (it doesn"t change for an individual) Individuals very in their privacy demands for different kinds of data. Stated purpose for which specific data element is being requested. Period of time for which data is stored. Definition: set of personal information that some party believes should be kept private. Ask yourself if the person (the requester of sensitive info) is associated with that sensitive information.
