Motivation: a set of internal and external factors that energize our behavior and direct it toward goals: drive reduction theory. Physiological need creates an aroused tension state (drive) that motivates the organism to satisfy the need. Want to get rid of uncomfortable tension. Goal of drive reduction is internal stability = homeostasis: arousal theory. We are motivated to maintain an optimal level of arousal (a certain state of emotional, intellectual, and physical activity) The level of arousal considered optimal varies from person to person. Physiological: need to satisfy basic needs: food, water, shelter, warmth. Safety: need to feel safe, secure, and stable: security, stability, and freedom from fear.
