Through contact with others, infants gradually become self-aware, knowledgeable human beings, skilled in the ways of a given culture. Perpetuates values, norms, and social practices of culture. Give boys and girls different toys and clothes right away. Gender roles-scripts for behavior based on our biological sex. Primary- learning to be a member of a culture. Secondary- learning to be a member of a specific group (e. g. occupation, hobby, enthusiast) The me imitate those around us. Learn to see ourselves as others see us. The generalized other learn the values, morals and rules of the culture. The customs of a given society (i. e. norms, customs, beliefs, material goods, etc. ) It(cid:859)s (cid:373)edia (cid:894)for this class) the movies, music, art, books, tv shows, etc. All culture has values: economic, political, social, and/or aesthetic. Cultural toolkit- variety of scripts to draw on depending on situation. Teaches us to associate certain ideas w/ specific symbols.
