Social structure vs. culture: social: what class you are, culture: social norms. Doing a study on how the neighborhood you live in effects crime. so if you live in a disorderly neighborhood then you are more likely to be involved in crime. this is an example of social structure. How you live, the messages you learn can be related to crime. this is an example of cultural. Folkways: ordinary norms (least serious: (ex) wearing a tie to a formal event, being quiet in a classroom. Taboos: extremely serious norms. (most serious) if you"re found breaking a taboo, you jeopardize your place in society. There may be no way to overcome your label in society: (ex) murder, rape, incest. If society thinks it"s serious enough, you will suffer punishment from the law for the norms.
