Document Summary

Observer has to figure out why certain people in a society do some things. Cultural relativism: behavior in one culture should not be judged by the standards of another. Ethnocentrism: judging other cultures using one"s own cultural standards. Cultural relativism is not a moral position, it is an ethnographic tool. Patterns of believes and behaviors make sense when studied in cultural context. Culture: learned behaviors, beliefs and attitudes characteristic of a particular society or population. This is called enculturation: the process of learning culture.
