In patrilineal systems: descent is traced through men only. Matrilineal societies are matrilocal: residence after marriage with wife"s kin group. Patrilineal societies are patrilocal: residence after marriage with husband"s kin group. When drawing a genelogy chart, it is similar to a family chart (circles and triangles) Ordered from oldest (on the left) to youngest (to the right) but not based on sex. If someone dies, you draw a line through them. If there was a divorce, you draw a line through the equal sign which means marriage. A family of orientation is the family you grew up in.
