ARCH 357 Lecture 2: SUMMARY DUE NOV. 14
Document Summary
In this reading, douglas kelbaugh introduces what citizens and planners should be doing at this moment. He splits these actions into seven different topics: development priorities, reduce automobiles, focus on transit, planning, granny units, funding and taxing, and governance. The basic idea of this reading is simple: explain to the reader what things they could be doing yesterday, today, and tomorrow to affect how urbanism works. In developmental priorities, kelbaugh specifically wants people to focus on redevelopment of existing areas rather than creating more suburban housing. He says that an easy way to do this is by setting limits of how far cities can grow outward (182). Stemming from the automobile problem, kelbaugh is adamant on transit. Reform policies so that we encourage public transport like buses, trains, and light-rails (185). Additionally, walking is a form of transport that often goes overlooked, so recreating zoning to reduce automobile trips would be very beneficial (188).
